Through unflinching repentance, knowledge of the self leads to knowledge of God.

If your prayer isn’t fervent, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t pleasing to God. Sometimes such prayer may be thought of as sacrifice, if you humble and censure yourself before God.

No one can live without sin, few know how to repent in such a way that their sins are washed as white as fleece. But there is one thing which we all can do: when we can neither avoid sin, nor repent truly, we can then bear the burden of sin, bear it patiently, bear it with pain, bear it without doing anything to avoid the pain and the agony of it, bear it as one would bear a cross, — not Christ’s cross, not the cross of true discipleship, but the cross of the thief who was crucified next to Him.

Obedience isn't a feature only of monastic life, but of that of all those who want to live in accordance with the Gospel and for Christ to be their ‘Lord and God’.

Nobody should say that it’s not possible for people to live a virtuous life, but rather that it’s difficult to do so. Nor can virtue be acquired by just anyone. The virtuous life is lived by those who are devout and have a mind that loves God.

If somebody has a disability- either because they were born with it, or inherited it from their parents or suffered it later, they should be happy about what they’ll receive in the next life. And if they’re not to blame, they’ll receive a full wage in heaven, without deductions.

We must assuredly pray for our enemies. If we don’t, it’s like throwing petrol onto a fire, making the flames more intense… Always thank Christ and Our Lady for everything, even your sorrows.

It needs repentance such as that shown by the Ninevites to change the Lord’s decisions. Otherwise many tribulations come into the world.

Unexpected things keep cropping up for us, because we have a will and hunger. These unexpected things are in conflict with our will and wishes, which is why they seem to be unexpected, though, in fact, they’re not. Because people who love God expect anything and everything and always say: ‘May Υour will be done’.

When people are deluded and neglect their duty, God doesn’t change His mind as regards the mercy He’s granted them. He doesn’t discard them as so much ash, but intervenes in an instructive manner in order to mend their ways.

Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi
